The knee is the largest joint in the body, located between the femur, patella and tibia. The end of each bone is covered with a protective layer of cartilage, which allows the knee to bend and straighten without friction. In a standing position, knees hold the bulk of our body weight, absorb impact and are very flexible, allowing us to climb stairs, bend down and perform other daily activities. Yet, one overextension could lead to a sprain, strain or dislocation. Chiropractic care is a natural way to relieve knee discomfort, so patients can continue their favorite activities.

Sports-Related Injury

At The Chiropractic Health Center of Glastonbury, our doctors are well-versed in sports injury and work with many local athletes. When someone has suffered a knee injury on the playing field, we adjust the joints to reset proper alignment and increase flexibility. We’ll also prescribe a series home exercises to help the athlete regain strength and mobility in the knee, coupled with a proper nutrition plan to reduce inflammation.

Other Causes of Knee Pain

In addition to sports injury, other common knee problems include mechanical problems, such as misalignment, muscular imbalance or tightness, and arthritis. Degenerative arthritis occurs when the cartilage that cushions the major leg bones experiences wear and tear. Bone exposure leads to friction, spurs and chronic pain that interferes with everyday life.

Chiropractic Treatment

For those with knee pain who have not experienced a sports injury, we may assess different areas of the body that are critical to knee function, including the lumbar spine. The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord, so when nerves in the spine become irritated, the resulting pain may travel down the entire body. A similar sensation would be the pain and numbness patterns associated with sciatica, which runs from hip to foot.

Gentle adjustments and other mobilization techniques increase range of motion and release tissues that may be pinched or caught between the bones.
