Athletes are constantly working to be better, stronger and faster than the day before. Unfortunately, pushing the body too hard can result in injuries that leave them sidelined. Regular chiropractic treatment can improve flexibility, strength and stamina, while preventing injury and increasing the body’s ability to perform.
Athletic performance is more dependent on the spine than any other skeletal structure. The spine is the pillar of the body, sending nerve signals to the muscles to move and contract. Even the slightest biomechanical issue – a weak core, poor range of motion in the rotator cuff – can lead to reduced performance, breakdown and injury.
All athletes want to win the race, play their best game or beat the record – while avoiding injury. A structurally and mechanically balanced body has a greatly reduced risk of injury. Athletes often wonder why they get injured, but never find out the actual cause of their repeat injury and chronic pain.
Conditions We Treat
Various sports require various demands, and some sports are more likely to cause injuries to certain parts of the body. The list is long, but includes:
- Shoulder
- Thoracic spine
- Spinal arthritis
- Disc degeneration
- Ankle
- Knee
- Neck
- Low Back
When a sports injury occurs, chiropractic care provides a balanced approach to healing quickly. It’s important for athletes to not only have injuries properly treated, but to take a proactive approach in evaluating and preparing areas of the body that likely carry the most stress in their specific sport.
Studies on Athletic Performance
Research supports the effectiveness of chiropractic care for sports performance. One study compared two groups of athletes in training; only one group received chiropractic care through the duration of the study. After six weeks, each group was measured for increases in agility, perception, power, speed or reaction and speed of movement. The non-chiropractic group improved their performance by an average of 4.5 percent, while the chiropractic group improved an average of 10.5 percent.
Another study found that on average, athletes who received chiropractic care had one more hour of sleep per night compared to athletes who were given fake chiropractic adjustments. This is important for athletes, who need rest to shorten recovery time and improve stamina.
Many professional athletes promote the benefits of chiropractic care. Take it from Tiger Woods, Evander Holyfield, Emmitt Smith, Joe Montana, Lance Armstrong, Dan O’Brien and Arnold Schwarzenegger, who trust chiropractic to prevent injury and keep the body healthy.
